Many people have talent when it comes to writing. For many it just seems like a fun hobby and a way to pass the time. However, with the struggling economy, more people are turning towards writing jobs to make a living or supplement their current income. If you have never done any writing jobs than you may not know where to begin. Where do you find jobs? What should you be charging? What types of writing do people hire writers to do? These are all questions that beginning writers ask themselves. Unfortunately, many never find the answers because it seems too hard to break into this business. But I can tell you from personal experience that it is not as difficult as you may think, and that there are many ways to make money with your writing. In fact, you may be much better at it than you originally thought and a new career may be born!
The first thing you should do is figure out what type of writing you are best at. I bet that if you think about your current career, you can find something you would be good at writing about. For instance, my father is a quality control engineer and he also does technical writing for Elance.com. For me, I was a psychology student and begin my first writing job as a self-help writer for a counseling website. See how easy it can be to find your writing niche?
Once you figure out what your specialty is when it comes to writing you can start searching websites that match up to your basic skills. Many websites use contributors to add to their professional content, and that contributor can be you! You can even begin by writing non-profit pieces to build up your portfolio. Even though you don’t get paid for work like this, it can lead to paying jobs for popular websites and this can help you begin a career of writing jobs.
If you are unsure about what your niche is, simply sit down at your computer and begin writing about something you are passionate and/or knowledgeable about. Save the piece and begin submitting it to various websites you think may be interested in it. It may take a while but someone will end up picking up the piece and this could be your new beginning. You can also start by writing editorial pieces for newspapers and magazines. This is a fantastic way to get noticed and perhaps get offered a job or two.
