The English language is perhaps the most important language in the entire world. It is used heavily in commerce and business in almost every other country, and it is the most popular second language learned by people all over the world. In the United States, high school students are required to have two semesters of a foreign language in order to graduate. The most common language for these young people to learn is Spanish. This is due to the heavy Hispanic population residing in the United States. The majority of businesses wish to hire people who are bilingual, and this typically means speaking both English and Spanish. Due to this influx of Hispanic immigrants, many people are starting to overlook the importance of other languages. Although it is most advantageous to learn Spanish, there are other languages that are also helpful to know in American society.
Next to English, French is the most popular language to learn. The “language of love” is spoken by 190 million people in the world. It is not only the official language of France, it is also spoken heavily in Switzerland, Belgium and, most important to Americans, Canada. Since Canada is our neighbor to the north, learning one of their most spoken languages is a good idea.
Many people shy away from the German language because it tends to be very rough sounding. However, with over 100 million people across the world speaking it, learning German may be a good idea for your career. This is because it is the language that is most spoken throughout the European Union. If you plan on having business of political dealings with European nations, German is the language that can put you in a good position. It is a good language to know if you plan on doing any kind of extensive travel throughout the European continent.
Since English has been the dominant world language for so long, it may be difficult for some to admit that Chinese (Mandarin) may be on the track to taking its place in the not so distant future. The American people do so much business with China and other Asian countries, that learning it may come in very handy one day. The hard part is that Chinese is one of the world’s most difficult languages to learn, so start now and be patient with yourself!
There are nearly 300 million people spread out across the globe that speak Arabic. It is one of the fastest growing languages in the world and this is one reason that it is beneficial for American’s to learn. The best reason for learning how to speak this language though, is that those who speak it are in very high demand in the United States. The global market is seeing massive growth when it comes to Arab speaking countries, so learning how to speak Arabic is just good business.
Although these are seemingly the most helpful languages for American’s to know, the type of career you want to have and the area in which you live will help drive you towards the right language(s) that you should study. Different parts of America may have a heavy population from a specific country and this may be a driving force in your decision as well. Learning a new language may be difficult, but in the end, you will likely find that it was well worth the effort you had to put in.
What do you think, are there any more languages American should learn?
