Why Should You Learn A New Language?

Why should I learn a new language? The question is recurring and you’re quite familiar with it. A new alphabet, hours of learning, many hours of practice thereafter and God-only-knows-how-long-it-will-take thoughts. Learning a new language comes with a big bag of difficulties. But, is that all there is to it? Surely not, because a new language is a value-add in many ways. Moreover, just in case you’re still thinking why, here are some compelling reasons for you to learn a new language.

Go beyond the usual
You speak and write wonderful English. However, is that enough? Probably not. Because languages like Chinese and Spanish are actually spoken more widely than English is. In addition, picking these languages up can surely take you a long way. If just the thought of learning does not drive you enough, think of the challenge behind it and how rewarding it can be once you’ve overcome that.

Exercise your memory

Why learn a new language? If you’re still asking this question, you need to take a moment and see whether you exercise your mind enough. Thanks to the challenge that learning a new language presents, your mental faculties will get exercised automatically.

Make yourself relocation-ready

Whether you’re a student or a working professional, relocation isn’t a very distant possibility. Often, when people expect it the least, an opportunity to relocate to a foreign land crops up. Although this aspect is anticipatory in nature, it’s always a good idea to be ready. Who knows tomorrow you might just get the chance to travel to far off lands you’ve always dreamt of!

Experience, experience and experience more
There’s always more of the world out there waiting to be experienced. One of the biggest reasons that push people to learn a new language is the ‘big picture’. New cultures, new people, new literature – the world out there is vast and always has something you could discover anew. If you’re someone who believes in garnering fresh perspectives every day, it can be a brilliant idea to pick up a new language.

Understand cultural differences better
Reading about different cultures is one way to understand and interpret them. However, to go deeper into that pursuit, there’s nothing like learning a new language. During the course of learning, you will get to know how certain words originated and if the language has influences of other languages. In the process, varied cultural aspects will become clearer to you.

Become indispensable to your employer
Now that you’ve landed a job that you’ve always wanted, it’s time to make sure it stays with you. And one of the best ways to do this is to bring an added edge to your repertoire. Learning a new language has a sure shot advantage in this regard. And it’s not difficult to guess why. The greater number of new languages you know, the better is your ability to interact with native speakers. If your company does business in those regions, you can help out in a big way. Just imagine the advantage if you’re the only one with this ability.

Welcome the excitement
Any new experience has the potential to send rushes of adrenalin through you. It’s not very different when you’re trying to learn a new language. The sheer novelty of the experience will make you want more of it. And now that technology has advanced a lot, there are many more fun ways to go about it. You could be taking a break from a meeting and catching up with your language lessons online!

There are many reasons to learn a new language. For most people, it’s got to do with landing a good job, meeting new people and adding a skill to their CV. What’s your reason?
